- Story Text: Election officials in Libya were busy arranging ballot boxes to be sent to Tripoli on Sunday (July 8) for vote counting.
In Misrata, officials received ballot papers from various cities, and will send them to the national capital.
"We received the secured bags number five and four that contain the papers of the final results for Bani Walid. Also, nearly half an hour ago we received the secured bags number four and five from the city of Zlitan and they will all be transferred together to the headquarters of the high election commission in Tripoli," said supervisor Ali Ghlawie.
In Tripoli, the election commission said a total of 1.7 million of some 2.8 million registered voters had cast their ballots, a turnout of around 60 percent.
"The number of voters to take part in the election procedure until polling stations were closed yesterday is around 1.7 million voters," Nouri al-Abar, the head of national election commission told a news conference.
Ballot boxes from Tripoli will be sent to Mitiga airport near the capital, so that the votes are kept safely.
A coalition of 65 liberal parties led by Mahmoud Jibril, the war-time rebel prime minister, claimed an early lead but the national election commission said that was premature given the small limited number of returns from polling stations.
