- Story Text: INTRODUCTION: The United Nations General Assembly has passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Kampuchea and the withdrawal of foreign troops. Meanwhile, in Kampuchea guerrilla forces have continued fighting against the Vietnamese-backed Heng Samrin government.
SYNOPSIS: These soldiers are members of the Khmer People's National Liberation Front. After starting from virtually nothing two years ago, it has become a force to be reckoned with and its leader, the former Kampuchean prime minister Son Sann, has been chosen to head a coalition government to be formed by his group, the Khmer Rouge and the Moulinaka guerrillas of Prince Sihanouk.
While these guerrillas were on the march against Vietnamese forces inside Kampuchea, the future of their country was being debated by the General Assembly of the United Nations.
At the end of the three-day debate, the delegates were asked to vote on a resolution sponsored by 33 countries which called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of foreign troops from Kampuchea, and free elections to be supervised by the United Nations.
The resolution was passed with 100 votes in favour. There were 25 against the 19 abstentions. This is the third year running that the United Nations have adopted such a resolution, and the delegates reaffirmed their support for the past resolutions and called for them to be implemented by the Kampuchean government as quickly as possible.
The delegates called for the United Nations conference on the Kampuchean situation to be reconvened. The first conference in July was boycotted by the Vietnamese and their Soviet Bloc allies. The delegates adopted the report produced by the conference and urged all states of South East Asia to attend future meetings of the conference. The conference also set up a seven-nation committee to help obtain a comprehensive political settlement of the Kampuchean question.
