- Story Text: Thousands of devotees have flocked to Manila's
commercial district of Quiapo for the feast of the Black
Nazarene.
Tens of thousands of devotees joined the procession
behind the wooden statue of the cross-bearing Black Christ
around the streets of Manila's commercial district on Saturday
(January 9).
The procession started around noon and is likely to last
for five five hours as the Image of the Black Nazarene is
towed through the main streets of downtown Manila.
Many of the devotees walked barefoot.
The devotees believe that if they touch and kiss the image
they will receive a special blessing or miracles will happen.
Devotees also scramble to hold the rope which pulls the
carriage of the Black Nazarene.
The Nazarene procession often dissolves into mayhem
because of the huge crowds.
The Black Nazarene statue was brought to the Philippines
by Spanish priests in the early 16th century.
