- Story Text: More than 12 million people in the German Democratic Republic cast their votes today (Sunday) in the country's parliamentary elections. They were electing 434 deputies to the East German Volkskammer (parliament) as well as councils for East Germany's 14 districts.
More than 21,000 polling stations were open from six in the morning. Brass bands pumping out martial music greeted early voters at many of the polling stations.
There are 583 candidates for the 434 deputy ships in the Volkskammer. Voters were invited to cross names off their ballot, but officials expect a basically unchanged proportionment of seats in the new parliament.
At present Herr Walter Ulbricht's Socialist Unity Party holds 117 seat - more than twice as many as any of the other four political parties.
Communist leaders have urged voters to make election day a day for fulfilling economic plans.
