- Story Text: Voting got underway on Wednesday (30 August) in the election of Council Members of the Arab National Union -- Jordan's only legal political organisation.
The election s being conducted in stages. Voters in northern Jordan, including the city of Irbid, have already cast their votes; polling in the Amman district will be held on 4 September and voting in other areas will be held later.
The election is for 240 members of the Council of the Arab National Union. The remaining 120 members will be appointed by King Hussein.
For the first time in Jordan, women have been allowed to vote.
Voting for representatives of the Israeli-occupied West Bank of the River Jordan is restricted to Palestinians now living on the East Bank.
Political parties were banned in Jordan before the general election in 1963. King Hussein announced the formation of the Jordanian National Union in September 1971 and its name was changed in March this year to the Arab National Union.
Advocates of "imported ideologies" such as Communism are now allowed membership.
