- Story Text: Official results in the first nationwide voting in the Khmer Republic for six years indicate a 91 per cent turnout and overwhelming approval for Marshal Lon Nol's presidential constitution.
Statistics published by the official khmer News Agency after one-fifth of the votes in provincial districts under government control were counted said 89 per cent of the electorate was in favour of the constitution.
The constitution would give stronger powers to the executive, including the right to dismiss the National Assembly at any time.
Marshal Lon Nol took over supreme power and proclaimed himself President seven weeks ago. He promised parliamentary and presidential elections within the next three months provided the electorate approved the new constitution.
As the voting went on, students continued demonstrations against Marshal Lon Nol despite a government ban on all political activity by persons under the age of 18 years. The students's demonstrations are reported to have been responsible for the resignation of several leading politicians in the country.
