Unless that is done, then really the council, not for the Arabs or Arab lives, but for its own integrity, should ponder a little more deeply about this very grave act". - Story Text: By a unanimous vote, the United Nations Security Council on Friday (21 July) called on Israel to release without delay the six Syrian and Lebanese officers abducted by an Israeli patrol which penetrate into Lebanese territory on 21st June.
The resolution -- jointly sponsored by Guinea, India, Somalia, Sudan and Yugoslavia -- also deplored Israel's lack of response to a previous call for the return of the captives made by the Council on 26th June.
The United States abstained in the voting, and Israel has refused to take part in the debate since it began on tuesday (18th July) and resumed on Thursday (20th July), on the grounds that the Council had refused to put forward a parallel Israeli resolution calling for an exchange of prisoners.
SYNOPSIS: On Friday the United Nations Security Council again asked Israel to release the Arab prisoners captured last month. The delegate for Syria....
Throughout the thee-day debate, the Israeli delegation had refused to attend, claiming 'discrimination'. But the vote was called for by the chairman.
The United States abstained, but the vote asking for the release of the prisoners was carried by a clear majority of fourteen to none.
