- Story Text: The Israeli army arrested dozens of Islamic militants throughout the West Bank in a campaign which started Monday night (January 23).
Only one day after 19 Israelis were killed by a suicide bomber, the Israeli army detained at least 50 Palestinians.
The raid was part of a new crackdown on Islamic activists they suspect of having ties to the Islamic Jihad movement.
Jihad claimed responsibility for the suicide bomb attack which threw the Middle East peace process into confusion.
Meanwhile, the Israeli government defeated a no-confidence motion on Tuesday (January 24) called by rightist parties in parliament over the government decision to review settler construction in the Jerusalem area.
The vote in Israel's 120-member parliament was 61-53. Six ultra-religious members of the house who generally support Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's government voted against it.
