- Story Text: Large queues formed up outside polling booths throughout Singapore for the island republic's fifth successive general election. Even the old and disabled turned out to vote.
By the end of the day the ruling People's Action Party, led by Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, had captured every seat in the sixty nine member Singapore Parliament. The Party campaigned on its record of turning the small city-state into one of the most prosperous areas in Asia.
During the election campaign Mr. Lee claimed that the real opposition to his government's policies came not from the opposition parties but from what he termed the, "communist underground." In a victory statement, the Prime Minister said that between ten and fifteen percent of those who voted against the government only did so because they were opposed to anything other than communist rule.
