- Story Text: At the Central Office of the Commission on Elections in Manila, votes cast during last week's national referendum in the Philippines are currently being counted.
with nearly one-fifth of some 20 million votes counted in the two-day referendum, President Ferdinand Marcos already appears certain to stay in office after 1973.
The Commission on Elections said that of the 5 million votes counted so far, over 85 per cent are in favour of Mr. Marcos carrying on as President of the Philippines to complete his martial law reforms after his second term expires at the end of the year.
The President declared martial law last September to check what he called a stats of rebellion in the Philippines. He now says he will adhere by the results of the referendum.
Throughout the weekend, advance results have been pouring in at the Central Office from provinces all over the Philippines. According to the Commission on Elections, full results of the national referendum will be announced by August 5th.
