- Story Text: INTRO: The winners of the Bosnian presidency elections are due to be announced on Wednesday after delays, but the organisers have released the vote tallies so far, saying the race is now "compelling".
Counting of votes from Bosnia Herzegovina's countrywide elections continued on Tuesday (September 17) with final results expected on Wednesday. But the poll's international organisers gave interim totals which showed a race developing for the overall presidency.
Robert Frowick, the head of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) mission in Bosnia, said some 85 per cent of the votes in the Moslem-Croat Federation had been counted and 79 per cent in the Serb Republic.
Frowick said Moslem leader Alija Izetbegovic had now polled 629,439 votes, against 508,026 votes for hardline Bosnian Serb candidate Momcilo Krajisnik.
Both men were certain of taking the Moslem and Serb seats in the collective presidency, but the candidate who polls most votes overall takes the first two-year chairmanship of the body.
Frowick said Krajisnik's main rival, Mladen Ivanic, had taken more than 240,000 votes, a stronger challenge than several independent experts had expected.
Frowick said Izetbegovic's main rival, former prime minister Haris Silajdzic, had polled 110,845 votes. Frowick declined to be drawn on the likely outcome, but said the trend was "increasingly compelling".
"There has been a certain political contest in this election, especially between Moslems in the Federation and (between) Serbs," Frowick said.
Already members of the Moslem-Croat Federation have met to discuss strategy. Bosnian Prime Minister Hasan Muratovic and his foreign minister Jadranko Prlic were in Zagreb for a meeting with Croatian President Franjo Tudjman on Tuesday, and were expected to be discussing their plans if Izetbegovic becomes president, or their response if Krajisnik were to poll most votes.
