- Story Text: INTRO: - A fresh wave of protests has erupted in Belgrade after authorities on Sunday annulled an opposition municipal election victory in the Serbian capital.
The annulment has provoked a pledge of new protests by opponents of the ruling Socialists and the Serbian President Slobodan Milosevic.
Tens of thousands angry demonstrators threw eggs at the Belgrade City Hall building on Monday (November 25) when they marched into a sixth day of protest.
The demonstration followed a report by State televisionof a municipal court ruling on Sunday which stripped opposition coalition Zajedno (Together) of a majority in the 110-seat city council, forcing another round of voting.
Opposition leaders urged voters to boycott the third round of disputed municipal elections on Wednesday, clearing the way for Yugoslavia's ruling Socialists to retain power tainted by allegations of electoral fraud.
Electoral authorities had confirmed last Tuesday Zajedno had obtained 60 seats in Belgrade.
Reversing the outcome denied the opposition its first grasp of power in modern Yugoslavia but left Milosevic's democratic credentials in ruins.
The opposition, accusing the authorities of massive fraud, organised peaceful demonstrations in Belgrade and other towns over the past five days in the country's biggest street protests in three years.
With Milosevic controlling a big police force and the state media, the opposition said it would try to exert pressure through strikes and civil disobedience.
Zajedno leaders have appealed for international support, which they said could tip the balance in their favour.
But Western countries have so far offered only muted statements expressing concern over possible election fraud.
