- Story Text: Italy's Prime Minister Lamberto Dini survived a dramatic vote of no-confidence on Thursday (October 26), snatching victory from the jaws of defeat with a pledge to resign by the end of the year.
The lower Chamber of Deputies voted by 310 to 291 with one abstention to reject a no-confidence motion moved by former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's Freedom Alliance.
Twenty-four deputies from the Marxist party Communist Refoundation crucially withdrew support for the centre-right motion after Dini promised to step down by December 31.
They said they would not take part in the ballot.
Dini turned the tables in a 45-minute speech in which he told deputies that success for the motion, which could have precipitated a snap general election, would wreck prospects for approval of Italy's deficit-cutting 1996 budget.
"The government will resign by, and not later than, the end of the year," the former central banker declared.
The pledge was enough to convince the Communist Refoundation party to withdraw support for the motion, which had looked set to pass by a razor-thin margin thanks to their votes.
