- Story Text: In Manila on Wednesday (9 January), thousands of people crowded the Philippine capital's streets for the annual procession of the Black Nazarene.
Every year, the Black Nazarene -- a statue depicting a black Christ carrying a cross -- is led in procession through the city's streets. Filipino Catholics believe the statue has miraculous powers and anyone demonstrating devotion to it during the festival will enjoy favourable luck for the rest of the year.
For the young men in particular, the statue holds a special fascination. It represents health and virility.
The method of transportation is also said to hold magical powers. According to the devout Filipino Catholics, the ropes used to pull the statue are said to give off blessings to anyone who touches it.
The day-long festival ends every year in the Plaza Miranda, when the statues is taken into the Quiapo Church. Once the Black Nazarene is inside, Mass is celebrated.
