- Story Text: Vote-counting in Mozambique's first multi-party elections was under way on Sunday (October 30) after officials reported a 90 per cent turnout among the southern African country's 6.4 million voters.
Fears that the turnout would be adversely affected by 75 percent illiteracy, logistical problems and an initial boycott by the main opposition Renamo movement proved unfounded in an election which international observers termed a model for Africa.
On Sunday morning United Nations (U.N.) envoy Adlo Ajello went to Renamo headquarters for a meeting with its leader Afonso Dhlakama. Ajello was expected to urge Dhlakama to accept the result of the elections. Dhlakama on Thursday pulled his party out of the poll, citing alleged fraud, only to rejoin the election a day later.
In an interview with Reuters on Sunday Dhlakama said that if the elections were free and fair, then Renamo would not contest it.
