- Story Text: Voters delivered a stinging rebuke to Colombia's scandal-tainted traditional parties in municipal elections on Sunday (October 30),voting for clerics, independents and eccentrics instead of career politicians.
While placing his vote, Colombia's President, Ernesto Samper Pizano, called for an end to political corruption.
The Liberals were humiliated in the capital, Bogota, where university philosopher Antanas Mockus swept into the mayor's office as an independent, crushing his Liberal opponent Enrique Penalosa by a margin of more than two to one.
Mockus became famous last year when he lost his job as university rector after flashing his buttocks in front of a group of unruly students. During the elections, he astonished the country's political class by winning without recourse to traditional party machinery, endorsements from national political figures and big donations.
Roman Catholic priests running as independents became mayors in the provincial capitals of Cucuta and Monteria and in the medium-sized towns of La Dorada and Sogamoso.
