Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem on Sunday
(November 14) insisted they had the right to vote in the
upcoming Palestinian presidential elections.
Palestinian successors to the late President Yasser
Arafat began preparing for presidential elections two days
after he was laid to rest in a mass funeral in his West
Bank compound.
Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie said a presidential poll
would be held by Jan. 9, within the 60 days set by law.
Little-known parliament speaker Rawhi Fattouh is acting
president.
But controversy over the right of Jerusalem Palestinians
to vote sprung up among Israeli officials on Sunday.
Some Israeli government ministers said Palestinian
residents of Jerusalem should not participate in the
elections as long as they fulfill their rights as Israeli
citizens. Others believe they belong to the Palestinian
people and should therefore have the right to elect their
next president.
In Jerusalem's old city, residents were keen to cast
their ballot for the next Palestinian president but said
it would be difficult.
"Of couse the election's something for the Palestinian
people but here in Jerusalem it's hard to pay their voicing
in the elections," said Mohammed, an East Jerusalem
resident. "The elections especially only in Ramallah, in
Jenin, Gaza only. Here's it's hard because they can't move
their voices. They can't. it's hard."
Others insisted the election and their participation in
it was the best road to peace.
"Without election it's be not peace," said Mustafa abu
Islam. Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurie said east
Jerusalem was annexed to Israel in 1967 and was not
internationally recognized therefore its Palestinian
residents have the right to participate in Palestinian
elections.
