- Story Text: Israeli PM loses vote in his party which will not
allow him to to bring the dovish Labour party into his
coalition, and imperil the disengagement plan.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's rebellious
Likud party has dealt a severe setback to his plan to
withdraw from occupied Gaza by voting to bar him from
forging a coalition with the Labour opposition.
Newspapers headlines on Thursday (August 19) called the
vote a "defeat" implying that Sharon suffered a
humiliation.
Pedestrians in Jerusalem had mixed feelings about the
vote on Thursday, but stood by Sharon as their leader.
"At least that have to let him try, let him try and
form his government so that he can do what he needs to do we don't
have to resort to early elections.", said Sarah
Hein, a Jerusalem, resident.
58 percent of Likud's Central Committee members voted
"no" to the question of whether the party should ally with
dovish Labour, which favours trading occupied land for
peace with Palestinians, and thus mired Sharon's plan in
uncertainty.
Sharon needs Labour in his cabinet to assure a
parliamentary majority for putting withdrawals into motion
next year.
Labour's chief negotiator, Dalia Itizk said that Sharon
should now hold general election as soon as possible.
"I hope that the Israeli public now understands the up
coming elections, in my opinion there is no possibility of
not having them. The issue is, who is for withdrawing from
Gaza and who is against. It is entirely clear now that the
Likud party decided to annex Gaza forever," Itizk said
Thursday.
Meanwhile violence continued in Gaza on Thursday.
Israeli tanks and bulldozers destroyed 8 houses in the Gaza
strip.
Residents of the destroyed houses in Rafah, looked
through the debris to try and find there belongings.
The Israeli army often raids Rafah in the southern Gaza
Strip, saying that they are looking for tunnels used to
smuggle in arms from Egypt.
And in Gaza City thousand of members of the militant
Islamic Jihad movement marched in support of the
Palestinian prisoner hunger strike.
About 2,200 Prisoner are on hunger strike in four jails
throughout Israel since the begging of the week.
