- Story Text: Former Romanian president Ion Iliescu has said he
trusts voters to elect him in the second round of elections
deemed critical to Romania's future. His ultra-nationalist
rival has accused Iliescu of resorting to fraud.
Iliescu, 70, Romania's first post-communist
president from 1990 until 1996 when he was defeated by
centrists, is favoured to beat flamboyant 51-year-old
publisher Corneliu Vadim Tudor in Sunday's (December 10)
election.
"I expect a better life and a good decision of our
people, I am confident." Ilisescu told reporters.
The West and mainstream Romanian politicians have painted
the choice as one between a candidate who will help this
desperately poor Eastern European country make needed reforms
and steps towards European Union membership or one whose
extreme views, including anti-Semitic barbs, would take it
backwards.
Tudor, oblivious to rules forbidding campaigning during
the vote, delivered a speech outside a polling station in
Bucharest's posh Cotroceni district, accusing his rival of
corruption and attempts to rig the vote.
Some 17.7 million Romanians are eligible to vote. Polls
opened at 7 a.m. (0500 GMT) and were to close at 9 p.m. (1900
GMT). The first official tallies are expected early on Monday
(December 11).
Tudor, whose newspapers regularly publish comments
offensive to Jews, Gypsies and Romania's large ethnic
Hungarian minority, came from behind in earlier opinion polls
to win 28 percent of the popular vote in the first round of
elections on November 26. Iliescu secured 36 percent of the
vote in the first round.
