- Story Text: Vote counting for Iraqi election gets underway in
north London.
Some Iraqis living in the UK finally saw the
process of voting in the elections move a step further as
their votes were counted in Wembley, north London.
People in the UK had been casting their ballots from
Friday (January 28) in their homeland's landmark election.
In London a steady stream of Iraqis had turned out in
rainy weather and cheered each other when casting votes.
They can now expect the end result of their endeavours to
be announced when the counting is complete and their
Wembley result sheet is sent with 357 other sheets from 34
Count Locations worldwide to the Results Compilation Room
in Amman, Jordan.
At the Wembley counting station in north London a
trained group of counters representing all ethnics groups
in Iraq opened ballot boxes and registered votes.
"My personal feeling, I feel excellent because it's my
opportunity, first window of opportunity to democracy.
It's very nice, I'm feeling very happy after 60 years we
are having a democratic election and I think its the first
step to democracy in Iraq," Shatha Besarani, senior
training assistant for counting staff said.
The election is for a 275-member national assembly that
will oversee the drafting of a permanent constitution.
Many Sunni Arab politicians and clerics had called for
an election boycott, citing violence and the U.S. troop
presence.
