- Story Text: A brand new Porsche 911 worth 140,000 German Marks
(US$63,840) has been dropped from a crane as part of a
promotion event organised by a Berlin radio station and a
polling institute.
Porsche enthusiasts and car haters alike were given the
chance to vote whether the car could be won or whether it
should fall 50 metres from a crane and be destroyed.
The sponsors of the event, communications company "yoc"
(your opinion counts) and "Radio Energy," said the aim of the
stunt was to "combine fun, luxury and influence to show people
how to achieve their will."
Bidders had one week to vote for either "cash" or "crash"
by sending a "short message system" (sms) from their mobile
phone.
A small majority of 53 percent wanted to see the luxury
sports car crash to its death. But feelings among spectators
in a country where cars are widely viewed as a status symbol
were certainly mixed.
Christine Lecht is still too young to drive and she voted
"crash" -- and was not disappointed: "It was really cool,
impressive," she said after the fall.
Matthias Pedrick, another youth, was clearly unconvinced
about the promotion's goals: "I would never want such a car to
be destroyed."
The youth probably spoke for all the car enthusiasts who
know they will never be able to afford a car which costs as
much as a small apartment and who saw their once in a lifetime
chance to win their object of desire destroyed in front of
their feet.
