- Story Text: In the remote Kenyan region of Kajiado, Masai herders
turned out to vote in the general elections.
In Kenya's Rift valley Province voting started early
on Friday (December 27).
At Kisamis polling station, there was a big turnout of
colourfully-dressed Masai voters, amid tight security.
Some 10 million voters in Kenya are due to elect a new
president to succeed Daniel Arap Moi, who has ruled since
1978, as well as parliamentarians and local council members.
Voters like Kipinget Sangaire said: "We haven't had any
problems today. We have voted peacefully in order to elect a
compassionate leader."
No irregularities or violence was reported either at
Tinga polling station some kilometres away from Kisamis.
But opposition politician George Saitoti complained about
voting difficulties in the nearby constituency of Bakasi.
"The ballot boxes could not be delivered there on account
that the place had rained heavily and could not be accessed
with the road.
So it was therefore decided - so we hear - by
the returning officer, that he would get a plane to fly the
ballot boxes there this morning.
But as we are now talking those ballot papers have not been sent there and the people are getting very, very unhappy about it." he said.
NARC leader Mwai Kibaki, 71, is widely tipped to defeat
his main rival in the presidential race, Uhuru Kenyatta, 41,
businessman son of independence leader Jomo Kenyatta and
candidate of the ruling Kenya African National Union (KANU).
If Kibaki wins this would be the first opposition victory
since Kenya introduced multi-party polls a decade ago and
would represent the end of 39 years of KANU dominance.
