- Story Text: Tens of thousands of voters from more than 100
villages in the former occupation zone in Lebanon have headed
to the polls for the first time in nearly four decades.
Voters in South Lebanon will elect 795 municipal
members for 94 municipal councils, as well
as 199 mukhtars in local elections on Sunday (September 9).
However, competition in many Shiite villages is expected
to be minimal after a forced alliance was reached three weeks
ago between Amal and Hizbullah, the two major parties in the
area.
The Moslem Hizbullah group was the driving force behind
the armed resistance that forced the Israeli army to pullout
from south Lebanon after 22-year occupation.
Amal movement is headed by the Shiite house speaker Nabih
Berri who is a strong ally of Syria in Lebanon.
Among those trying to succeed in the elections,
particularly in Marjayoun, are leftist parties who lost ground
in the country's latest parliamentary elections.
In particularly Christian towns all-out competitions are
mostly taking place on the basis of family loyalties, with
locals viewing the elections as a chance to reshuffle the
cards in the electoral game.
Observers believe the results of the elections will be a
key indicator of who is gaining ground on the Shiite front
before the next parliamentary elections.
