- Story Text: Though the sole presidential candidate in this month's election, President Albert Bernard Bongo of Gabon has been conducting a vigorous campaign to secure the support of the electorate.
On Friday (February 16), he addressed a major rally in Libreville's Place de l'Independence as part of an extensive speaking tour -- it has also taken him to the economic centre of Port Gentil and to villages in the interior.
The President's tour is part of the campaign organised by the Democratic Party--the only Gabonese party--to ensure a full turnout at the elections.
SYNOPSIS: With Gabonese elections looming at the end of February, President Albert Bernard Bongo has been playing an active part in campaigning. Thought he's the sole presidential candidate, he has embarked on a vigorous speaking tour to ensure the support of the electorate. Here he was addressing a rally in the Place de l'Independence, Libreville, last week. The President's campaign has taken him from isolated villages in the interior to the country' economic capital, Port Gentil.
The President's speaking tour is part of a wider campaign by the Democratic Party -- the sole political party in Gabon -- to ensure that their policies are explained to the nine-hundred thousand Gabonese voters. Candidates for the National Assembly will also be elected on February 25th, and the size of the assembly will be increased from forty-nine to seventy deputies.
