- Story Text: Hundreds of Haitians register to vote in upcoming
elections on National Registration Day.
Haitian officials designated Sunday (July 24, 2005)
National Registration day in an attempt to get more
Haitians to register for the upcoming elections.
Bands, dancers and MC's entertained hundreds at Place
Jeremy, near downtown Port au Prince where hundreds waited
in long lines under the scorching sun to register to vote.
For many Haitians, the voter's card will be their first
piece of valid identification that they hope may facilitate
other forms of legal documents such as passports.
Balloting to choose local government officials is to be
held on October 9. Legislative and presidential elections
are scheduled for November 13, with a run-off set for
December 18.
A growing number of politicians and others involved in
the electoral process have expressed concern about
precarious security in the troubled Caribbean nation, the
poorest country in the Americas.
An estimated 4.2 million of Haiti's 8 million people
are expected to secure a National Identity Card, which will
allow them to cast a vote.
