- Story Text: International Olympic Committee inspectors meet in Beijing to assess the preparation progress for next year's Olympics and indulge in a game of table tennis, China's favourite sport.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors began their eighth visit to Beijing on Tuesday (April 17) to check on preparations ahead of the 2008 Summer Olympics.
The IOC's coordination commission will spend three days touring the venues and meeting with officials from the Beijing organising committee (BOCOG) to discuss the fine details of next August's Games.
Discussions are expected to focus on logistics and catering for athletes, media and spectators. Sensitive issues such as the Olympic torch relay and the building timeframe are also likely to be discussed.
Beijing officials recently admitted to being behind schedule on its widely publicised centrepeice stadium. The IOC officials will visit this stadium as part of its tour, along with the Water Cube aquatics centre.
Chairman for the Coordination Commission Hein Verbruggen took time out from the tour to indulge in a spot of table tennis with BOCOG chief Liu Qi (pron: lee-oh chee).
Their friendly game was part of a "mass participation" competition for Beijingers which will climax in some 10,000 playing at the city's iconic Temple of Heaven park later this year. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
