- Story Text: With the Beijing Olympics just 200 days away, Japan opened a new indoor national training centre for its Olympic athletes on Monday (January 21).
The 21 billion-yen (200 million-US dollar) facility built in western Tokyo has training rooms tailored for each indoor sport, such as badminton and gymnastics, along with athlete's accommodation and cafeteria.
Japan's sports officials praise the long-awaited training facility, saying it is a long-time dream come true.
"It has been our long cherished wish to build this facility for the past half century. It was even before the Tokyo Olympics (in 1964) that Japan's national coaches and athletes first requested that this kind of facility be made," Tomiaki Fukuda, a Japan Olympic Committee executive told a news conference.
One of the training centre's features is a high-tech video system designed to analyse athletes' motion. Video cameras and monitors have been installed in each training room so that coaches and athletes can together check the athletes' style and movement whilst in the training room.
"In this training room, we have five video cameras - one at each of the four points of the compass and one on the ceiling. The cameras allow us to analyse the athletes' movements on the monitors and give them our feedback on the spot," said Tokuro Takemata, a coach for Japan's national weightlifting team. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
