- Story Text: South Korea's Olympic Committee unveiled their uniforms for the 2012 London Games at a fashion show in Seoul on Monday (April 23).
Models on the catwalk displayed the new sportswear which has been designed to reflect the nation's culture and tradition.
Sports fashion house FILA designed the sportswear, taking their inspiration from the taegeuk pattern which is the circle of yin and yang - blue on the bottom and red on the top - as shown on the South Korean national flag.
The Dancheong pattern, which is the traditional multicoloured paintwork used on wooden buildings, was also incorporated into the design.
"Olympics are not just simply about sports but a venue for promoting each nation's culture and tradition. Therefore, we're showcasing the uniforms so that we can show our developed culture and image of the country to the world," said Kim Yong, PR & Marketing Director of the Korean Olympic Committee.
Another clothing manufacturer designed the suits which will be worn during the opening and closing ceremonies. The designers said its concept for the suit was to honour the 1948 Games also held in London, the first time the country had competed in an Olympics.
"London Olympics was the first Olympic games that our country participated with a flag of Republic of Korea. It was 64 years ago. And Olympic Games will be held again in London in 64 years. So we reinterpreted a uniform, which was worn back then, in a modern style to revive the glory in 1948," said Shin Myung-eun, vice president and creative director of Bean Pole design division at Cheil Industries.
Cho Eun-ji, a member of South Korea's women's hockey squad, said that she was looking forward to having the new uniform.
"I will play harder in the uniform and make a good result in the London Olympics," she said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
