- Story Text: London 2012 organisers on Friday (June 1) unveiled the victory ceremony podium, ceremonial custumes, make-up and flowers to be used in the 805 medal ceremonies during the upcoming Olympic Games.
The design of the royal purple podiums and custumes were created by students from London's Royal College of Art (RCA).
A team of five students - Gaetano Ling, Hong-Yeul Eom, Luc Fusaro, Heegun Koo and Yan Lu - was responsible for the podium.
"The whole identity of the Games is about bringing people together and energy so we wanted to create a form that was really dynamic, that would leave a lasting impression of the Games," Gaetano Ling told Reuters.
"We tried to make a form that was interesting from every angle, whether you were watching it from home on your television or you were watching it inside the stadium."
Forty podiums will be used during the victory ceremonies at the various Games' venues with around 4,400 medal-winning athletes set to stand on them to receive the prize.
Ling said the five students had spent the last eight months working with LOCOG officials on the final version.
"London 2012 came to our college, the Royal College of Art, and they had a competition to design the podium and the custumes for the Games," he explained.
"We all met while studying our course, Innovation Design Engineering, and we proposed our idea and it ended up winning.
"It went through a series of refinements with our tutors and London 2012 and the result is what you see today."
The ceremonial custumes will be worn by around 100 female volunteer athlete and presenter escorts and 200 male volunteer flower and medal bearers.
London 2012 is the first time in Games history where flower and medal bearers will be male.
Thomas Crisp, Trine Hav Christensen and Zara Gorman were responsible for the three different outfits.
"It's really important to bring in all of the elements, all of the heritage, all of the history of the event and pay respect to it within the outfit," Christensen told Reuters.
"So for me, paying respect to where it all began within the Greek mythology, within the draping and how they cut the body up with the lines. And also paying respect to the fact that it is in London this year so bringing in a lot of British heritage.
"And making sure that, yeah, it kind of goes around the world, it's not too British but at the same time (I) feel that it's a look that enhances and embraces the whole world." - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
