- Story Text: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) delegation held a news conference on Wednesday (June 06) to talk about Rio de Janeiro's preparation for the 2016 World Cup and said the time for the delivery of the constructions is short.
After a three days of inspection, the head of the IOC Nawal El Moutawakel joined Rio's officials to share their impressions about the city's preparations.
El Moutawakel said the delegation felt there was little time for the conclusion of the projects for the Olympic Games.
"It is becoming apparent that the time lines for delivery are very tight and the amount of work to be completed (is) very considerable," she said.
Head of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), Carlos Nuzman, said the COB is not being pressured.
"There are no hard feelings or pressure. There are only the natural necessities that any organization should have, especially with four years to go to the Olympics," he said.
At the news conference, Moutawakel also said the delegation remains confident that the city will get ready in time for the competitions.
"We are also confident that there remains sufficient time to deliver what is needed," she said.
Their latest report, released after last year's visit, praised local officials for their remarkable progress for the Olympics.
On Tuesday, the delegation visited Rio de Janeiro's transport works planned for the 2016 Games as it continued its 3-day inspection to the city.
Brazil's Olympic Committee head Carlos Nuzman and Rio's mayor Eduardo Paes also showed the IOC delegation the work at the metro station being built at the foot of the massive Rocinha slum.
The station will help ease traffic between Rio's southern region to the western neighbourhood of Barra da Tijuca, where the Olympic village will be set up.
Lately, Rio has come under criticism by human rights groups who say the new highways are being used as an excuse to evict poor communities without paying them proper compensation or offering alternative housing nearby. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
