- Story Text: International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge said on Friday (July 20) that the London games will be great and not even the British weather can change that.
Speaking after arriving in London, Rogge was asked if he expected great performances at the games starting next Friday (July 27) and replied: "I expect the maximum of course because we organised the games for the welfare of the athletes. But I'm very confident, I believe these are going to be great games. Our preparation in spite of some difficulties has been very sound, all the bases have been covered so I'm very optimistic."
Britain has had a poor Summer so far, but Rogge said the weather would not affect the quality of the Olympics.
"No, it might affect in a minor way the scheduling of the tennis at Wimbledon, but this is something we've known about for some time, and even with the roofs on the main two venues, there's a lot of matches to be played on open air pitches, but other than that I don't see many problems," said the IOC leader.
He was also asked about the importance of the games being held in Britain.
"I think it will contribute a lot because this is a country that has invented modern sport, that loves sport and they have codified sport, they have included it in their own school curriculum ,so it's a good promotion for sport overseas," said Rogge. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
