- Story Text: Officials from the Ukrainian city of Lviv considered entering a bid for the 2022 winter Olympics on Friday (August 3), following the success of this year's Euro soccer championship.
The area hosted several Euro matches and is now eager to develop winter sports in the region.
"We are working together with the International Olympic Committee, with the National Olympic Committee, with the Ukrainian government about embarking on this path. It is a long way to go and it is not easy but it would give Ukraine and our city a chance to put us on the map," head of the Euro 2012 Department of the Lviv City Council Oleg Zasadny said.
"Probably nobody believed when Ukraine and Poland submitted a bid to host the (Euro 2012) championship that we would win the right to host it and that the championship would be so successful," Zasadny added.
But in central Lviv, residents were divided.
"I'm for it with both hands. We held the Euro 2012. Skeptics had been saying that we wouldn't make it, that we would fail. Enough moaning. Only self-promotion will make Ukraine a civilised country," Lviv resident Andrei Pidcheby said.
"I think it's a bad idea. There was so much red tape with the Euro 2012. I don't want this to happen again," Lviv resident Orest Ivanishin said.
The western Ukrainian city of Lviv invested millions in stadiums and infrastructure but staged just three group matches in the Euro 2012 contest.
Another Lviv resident, Nadezhda Stek told Reuters she was in favour of her city hosting the Olympics, but still had her doubts.
"I think it will be very good. Ukraine is in demand in the world. It will be wonderful and we will all be happy. But will Ukraine be worth it? That I don't know," Stek said.
The 2022 Games host will be selected in 2015, with the bidding campaign kicking off next year. Several cities in the United States have also expressed an interest in bidding.
Russia's Sochi will host the 2014 winter Olympics while Pyeongchang in South Korea will stage the 2018 Games. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
