- Story Text: The Olympic football gold medal is still a dream for Brazil's national squad after Mexico stunned Brazil 2-1 on Saturday (August 11) in front of 86,162 fans at Wembley Stadium, handing the five-time World Cup champion team its first loss during London's Olympic Games On Rio de Janeiro's scenic Leme Beach, South American beauties danced samba as bathing suit-clad fans squinted in the sun to watch the game on a large screen television.
Striker Oribe Peralta put Mexico ahead only 28 seconds into the match after a defensive mix-up between Sandro and Rafael.
Brazilian fans were disappointed but one man, Jorge-- a Mexican who refused to give his surname-- cheered, although he admitted that, surrounded by fans for the opponent's team, he was a bit scared.
"I am a little bit afraid because...I say 'goal' and everybody stares at me... but when we are in a risky situation, I try to think about something, create something and run away," he said.
At the second half, striker Peralta added Mexico's second goal with a header.
Brazil's goal came in the 90th minute after striker Hulk scored.
With seconds remaining, mid-fielder Oscar had a golden chance to equalize but headed wide.
Brazil soccer fan Luciano de Lima said he was disappointed with the result, but still held high hopes for the next Olympic Games, which will be played at home.
"All Brazilians are disappointed. One more time we win silver medal, we had hopes on (Brazil's striker) Neymar and other good players, but unfortunately it didn't happen. Let's try in 2016", he said.
"The boys play well, but they weren't serious and we are silver, so let's cheer and celebrate this medal", said journalist Lara Santos.
The result leaves Brazil still searching for the one major title to elude them after trying for 60 years.
It was their third defeat in an Olympic final after previous losses in 1984 and 1988. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
