- Story Text: A British delegation met with Brazilian officials at a hotel in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (November 23) to share their experience of hosting last summer's Olympics.
It was the culmination of a week-long set of meetings in which British officials, led by the UK's Sports and Tourism Minister Hugh Roberts, debriefed their Brazilian counterparts on the different aspects of staging an Olympic Games.
The British delegation, which included the UK's Security Minister, James Brokenshire and London 2012 Committee Chief Executive, Paul Deighton, seemed impressed by Rio's potential to host a successful Games.
Addressing Brazilian officials on Friday (November 23), Roberts warned that obstacles will come along the way, and that the best way to face them is to be adequately prepared.
"Starting early means that you should finish early and that gives you extra time, in our case a full year, to test and refine. You can't ever, ever rehearse this enough," he said.
The pressure is on the Brazilian government to take the baton from a city and country which many say hosted one of the most successful and well-organised Games in recent memory.
The biggest country in South America is in a unique position, as it will consecutively host the FIFA's Confederations Cup in 2013, the World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.
The 2016 Olympics will be the first Games to ever be held in South American soil. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
