- Story Text: Myanmar's pro-democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi attended the Opening Ceremony of the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games on Tuesday (January 29) in South Korea.
Some 2,800 athletes with intellectual disabilities from 110 counties will participate in the Winter Games which will run until February 5.
The Games kicked off with a torch relay that culminated with the lighting of the Special Olympics flame.
Suu Kyi gave a speech in which she said she hoped those attending the games could help overcome discrimination against people with disabilities.
"Disablement is something that is not permanent." she said, "the spirit can overcome every disablement that the world can throw at us."
The Burmese opposition leader, Suu Kyi, one of the world' most prominent political prisoner, remained under house arrest in Myanmar for almost 15 years until she was released in 2010 when the government began slowly introducing political reforms.
It was the second day of Suu Kyi's five-day visit to South Korea, during which she will receive a human rights award in the city of Gwangju, where a pro-democracy uprising was launched in 1980. She will also receive an honorary doctoral degree from Seoul National University in recognition of her contribution to promoting human rights and education.
