- Story Text: Hundreds of people gathered in the centre of Turin on Sunday (February 26) to watch the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games on a giant screen.
The large crowd assembled in Turin's piazza San Carlo were able to see the event, which ends the two-week sporting extravaganza, free of charge. Many who turned out to watch the show were local residents.
The closing ceremony was being held at the Olympic Stadium in Turin, where thousands donned carnival masks to join in a celebration of all things Italian to close the 20th Winter Games.
Italian cross-country skier Giorgio di Centa provided a fairytale finale for the Turin Winter Olympics on Sunday, fuelling celebrations to close the 20th Games.
Di Centa ended the two-week sporting extravaganza by winning the final cross-country skiing event and Sweden clinched the last gold medal up for grabs by edging Finland 3-2 in the ice hockey final.
"We went to Pregelato this moring for the beautiful gold medal of Giorgio di Centa, the last medal on the last day of the Olympic Games for Italy. It's been a long time since we've won in cross-country, and it was a beautiful emotion," said Michel from the Italian region of Aosta.
The last two medals in Turin went to Sweden and silver medallists Finland in the most unexpected of ice hockey finals after traditional heavyweights U.S., Russia and champions Canada left empty handed.
Italians were delighted with the Games' success: "I watched everything. I followed the events, it was beautiful and this ceremony is beautiful. Everything was very well organised. I am very proud about being from Turin. Let us not forget that shortly the Paralympics will begin, we shall see," said local resident Michel.
"It's beautiful, it's really beautiful. It surely is one of those things that does not happen often in life," said Elizabetta, also from Turin. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
