- Story Text: Sandra Kiriasis steered her Germany I sled to victory in the women's Olympic bobsleigh competition on Tuesday (February 21), tightening her country's stranglehold on the sport.
Kiriasis and brakewoman Anja Schneiderheinze clocked the fastest time in three of the two-day event's four runs, to clock a combined winning time of three minutes 49.98 seconds.
"It's a childhood dream and it came true yesterday," Kiriasis told Reuters Television on Wednesday (February 22).
"We're still dreaming a bit, but once we get the medals hanging around our necks then we will be able to really realise it," Schneiderheinze said.
A silver medallist when women's bobsleigh made its Winter Games debut four years ago in Salt Lake City, the 31-year-old Kiriasis mastered the tricky Cesana track for a comfortable win.
Shauna Rohbock's United States I sled won the silver medal, while the Italy I bob driven by Gerda Weissensteiner thrilled the home fans with the bronze.
German is the bobsleigh superpower and won gold in the two-man event on Sunday (February 19), so could complete a hat trick of titles in the four-man race on Friday and Saturday (February 24 and 25).
Germany currently tops the Winter Olympics medals table with 21, including nine gold and Schneiderheinze said it has no intention of letting go of the lead.
"We are all fighting to make sure that Germany stays ahead," she said. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
