- Story Text: World champion figure skater Stephane Lambiel is still hoping to perform at a high level at the Winter Games despite injuring his right knee 12 days ago.
"I think I can do my best with my knee and I hope that I can do that," Lambiel told a news conference on Sunday (February 12).
"I am going to do my best with or without the injury."
The 20-year-old Lambiel, who won a silver medal at the European championships last month, was expected to challenge favourite Yevgeny Plushenko from Russia for the Olympic gold.
But he twisted his right knee in a practice on February 1 casting doubts on his ability to perform triple and double jump combinations.
Lambiel, who had only just arrived in Turin, said he had endured intensive physiotherapy since his fall and had made a last-minute decision to come to the Games.
The first outing for the Swiss will be in the short programme on Tuesday. Coach Peter Grutter said the injury could even aid Lambiel, who has made a number of careless mistakes in recent competitions due to lapses in concentration.
He also dismissed speculation Lambiel had concocted the injury so he had a ready excuse if he failed to live up to expectations at the Games. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
