- Story Text: Striking workers construction returned to the work site of Rio's 2016 Olympic park Tuesday (April 8) morning to continue pressing for higher pay and health care, a day after clashing with security guards.
The construction workers have been on strike since April 3. On Monday (April 7) a scuffle broke out between striking workers and guards. Eyewitness said there were shots fired, but that no one was injured in the melee.
Tuesday morning, dozens of workers gathered outside the work site as one union's members distributed flyers and spoke at length about worker rights.
Union member Marcos Vinicios said that the workers are demanding more equality.
"We are laying claim to the right of the worker to have medical coverage that covers the family and not just the worker. Workers in administrative roles have this extended family coverage but we do not. We think that this is unjust. So, we are asking for greater equality and the health plan that extends to family. We also ask that this be passed while other construction projects are being set up," Vinicios said.
The construction consortium responsible for the park, which is slated for delivery in the first half of next year, has vowed the strike would not affect delivery dates.
The Olympic Park is one of the focal points of Rio's Olympic Games and will host judo, basketball, tennis, handball and cycling events at a host of purpose-built facilities.
The international broadcast centre and the main media base will also be located in the park, which is being built on the site of Rio's former Formula One track.
Rio won the right to host the summer Olympics in 2009 and will become the first South American city to host the world's biggest multi-sport event.
Brazil will also host soccer's World Cup this June and July. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
