- Story Text: Snow and freezing rain caused chaos on the roads in Berlin at the weekend.
Wet roads and temperatures around freezing meant that the roads were quickly turning into black ice.
The Berlin fires service had announced an emergency situation the night before as roads had frozen over at a moment's notice and caused dozens of accidents. The fire service had had to turn out 480 times within four hours.
Many people left their cars at home on Sunday (January 6).
Berlin resident Guenther Pfuetzenreuter said: "That is what winter is about, such weather, you have to be prepared to cope with it. I don't have a problem with it."
Another Berlin resident said: "I don't have a problem with it, I left the car at home and am on foot, that's enough in this weather isn't it? You don't need to be out in the car in this sort of weather."
The situation on the roads was improving later on Sunday, as temperatures rose slightly, causing the ice to melt, although snow continued to fall. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
