- Story Text: Heavy rains continued to fall on the South Korean capital of Seoul on Wednesday (July 27), flooding roads and disrupting traffic.
Over the past 24 hours, Seoul has recorded over 400 mm (16 inches) of rainfall, which caused flash floods and landslides.
"It's my first visit to South Korea in three years, and I wonder if the country has ever had such heavy rains in July. I was very surprised as there were many thunderstorms and lightning.
I was staying in a hotel and couldn't go out. I'm waiting for the rain to stop," said 40-year-old Seong-mi.
Bad weather has battered the peninsula since late Tuesday (July 26), causing widespread flooding and transport delays.
"It's as if water bombs are falling down. I hope the rain stops soon," said 50-year-old Lee Eun-sook.
A blackout hit the south of the city, suspending train services. Subway stations in Seoul were turned into swimming pools, stranding commuters.
"With the sudden rains, streets are flooded and buses are stuck in traffic. It's so hard to make any appointment in time. It's even hard to walk around," said 25-year-old Lee Dong-gi.
Earlier in the day, a landslide triggered by torrential rain crashed into a mountain resort east of Seoul, destroying four buildings and killing at least 12 people, officials said.
Emergency workers said at least four people were killed in other accidents related to the severe weather.
The weather bureau has forecast more heavy rain in the next 48 hours. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
