- Story Text: Temperatures neared 100 degrees F (37C) in Washington, DC on Tuesday (May 31) and the National Weather Service issued a warning that temperatures and high humidity would cause the heat index to rise above 100 degrees (37 C).
The average temperature for May 30 is 80 degrees.
More hot weather is expected for Wednesday (June 1) in Washington and the entire the mid-Atlantic region.
Air conditioned cooling centers have opened in the region and several schools without air conditioning dismissed students early.
Near the National Mall, Carmen Undiano, a tourist from Florida, took refuge in the shade and cooled off with an iced popsicle.
"Oh my God its way too hot, it's hotter than Florida right now," she said.
Another tourist, Bob Spoles from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, said he didn't expect temperatures to be so high.
"I'm from out of town --Lancaster County, PA (Pennsylvania) -- and didn't anticipate it being quite this hot," he said.
But while tourists could cool off with shade and cold drinks, outdoor workers battled the heat.
Ahsaki Daley emptied trash cans on the Mall.
"A job like this involves walking and involves heat indexes. This job should have been done 7:00 this morning," she said.
Lower temperatures are expected in the region by Friday. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
