- Story Text: The Northeast of Germany is currently afflicted by a cold snap with temperatures plummeting to below zero.
Germans in the capital Berlin are usually used to the cold winter winter. But the current cold spell has been particularly frosty, even for Berliners. For weeks temperatures have hardly climbed above zero. On Sunday (January 24) Berliners work up to temperatures of minus 14 degrees.
But people in the city are making the most of the icy conditions.
On the Wannsee lake where people are usually seen sailing or sunbathing people could be seen ice skating and playing ice hockey.
One of the people making the most of the cold weather was Philip Rabe, a trainer at the Berlin Yachtclub.
"Play a bit of ice hockey, the weather is perfect. It has to be cold and now even the greater Wannsee is frozen up. So it doesn't matter, if it is ten degrees below zero. It's quite wonderful and you do warm up once you start playing. We also brought some hot tea, so we should be fine."
For those less interested in skating there was also an alternative activity, ice fishing.
Many fisherman wrapped up warm and came to find their catch of the day whilst wildlife looked on.
People may be taking to the ice, but firemen are warning people not to step on to the ice in fear of it breaking. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
