- Story Text: Snow came to the normally sun-kissed Mediterranean coastline of southern France on Thursday (February 2) as a cold snap that has frozen over much of Europe spread to the south of the country amid forecasts of sharply lower temperatures to come.
Palm trees in France's port city of Marseille were covered in snow as the local children seized the opportunity for a rare snowball fight.
On the motorways leading into town, heavy goods vehicles were held back, causing tailbacks and delays for commuters struggling to get to work in temperatures that remained below freezing point.
But for those who did not have to go out and about and whose houses were warm, it was a chance to marvel at the beauty of the snow-kissed scenery.
"We're really happy that we had snow, especially in this area, where we don't really have the occasion to see snow. We're very happy," said one local resident.
State weather body Meteo France declared a severe weather warning in 25 regions in France, mostly in the south and in the east.
Temperatures are forecast to fall as low as -10 degrees Celsius in central France and around Paris in the next few days, according to the Meteo France website. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
