- Story Text: High waves - some as large as 9.8 feet (3 metres) - brought spectacular surf to Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (May 22).
Lifeguards kept a close watch as surfers took the plunge to make the most of the unusually heavy waves.
On Monday, two fishermen were injured after they were dragged out to sea by powerful waves.
Firefighter, Marcelo Pinheiro, said the men disobeyed signs telling people not to go out to sea.
"Unfortunately, yesterday, two fishermen disobeyed the life guards' instructions and put themselves in danger. A big wave hit both men. One had a head injury and the other one was thrown in the sea and suffered a few cuts," he said.
Surfers like Yuri Castro enjoyed the unusual waves.
"There was a wave just like the Hawaii famous pipeline. I have been there a few times, and this was very much like the pipeline. When there are waves this big it is a little bit dangerous for some people that do not know how to surf very well," said Castro. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
