- Story Text: Athletes began competition on the first day of the Olympic games in Beijing on Saturday (August 09) under a blanket of high temperatures and heavy humidity.
Temperatures hovered around 29 degrees celsius and humidity was near 80 percent.
"It is hot and when you walk outside it is very wet, you know. Se we have to drink a lot or else you get really tired because in Denmark the weather is quite colder than here, so it is different and you need to get used to it," said Badminton Lena Frier Kristiansen.
Team doctors were advising their athletes to hydrate throughout the day.
"You must drink, I think two to three liters of water a day. You must take extra minerals and vitamins against sunstroke, against humidity and high temperatures. You must have a good cap," said Estonian team doctor, Sergei Voronetski.
Thundershowers were forecast for hazy Beijing later on Saturday with more rain on Sunday (August 09). - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
