- Story Text: Hollywood star Johnny Depp, one of this year's Golden Globe Award nominees, said that the cancellation of the Golden Globe Award ceremony was "not his fault".
Hollywood star Johnny Depp arrived in Japan on Tuesday (January 8) to promote his latest musical movie, "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," which will hit Japanese theatres later this month.
Depp, one of this year's Golden Globes award nominees, arrived at Narita International Airport near Tokyo after Golden Globe organizers' announced that they were scrapping the usual gala ceremony this weekend due to a Hollywood writers' strike.
Hundreds of fans, who were waiting for hours - some even for two days near the airport - screamed and waved at the 44-year-old star as he showed up in the arrival hall lobby after his private jet landed from Los Angeles.
With Japan's state-of-the-art mobile phone cameras and movie recorders in their hands, many fans were emotional.
"I cannot describe my feelings. I showed my Johnny doll to him, and then he pointed his finger at it and smiled," said a tearful Yasue Takezawa, 21, holding her hand-made stuffed "Johnny" doll in her arms.
Fans travelled from across the country to get a glimpse of the Hollywood actor.
"I waited here for two days. But it was worth it," said Aya Ogata, 19, who came from Nagoya and slept only a few hours outside the airport the previous night.
"This is my dream-come-true. Now my daughter and I can finally return to my home town," said Shibuya, 43.
At the film's premiere later in the evening, Depp, made a show of indifference when he was asked what he thought about the Golden Globes' cancellation:
"What do I think about the cancellation of them ? It is not my fault," Depp said with a smile.
"You know, I don't have any real response to. At least I don't have to make a trip to Los Angels which is I am happy about," Director Tim Burton added. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
