- Story Text: German ski resort of Garmisch-Partenkirchen celebrates its new ski jump complex.
A new ski jump complex was opened at Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Friday (December 21).
The old jump had fallen behind modern standards and was demolished in April. Construction work began immediately to a tight schedule. The recontoured hill was opened on Friday before an appreciative crowd, well before the New Year.
While firework rockets were fired into the sky, ski jumper Felix Schoft made the first official jump from the structure and the crowd down the hillside applauded.
Garmisch's Olympiaschanze has seen some of the longest ski jumps over its 55 year history, often at the traditional New Year Four Hills tournament meeting. With the new-built ski jump the organisers at Garmisch are hoping for jumps as long as 150 metres.
The opening came just weeks after the Bavarian ski resort was confirmed on December 8 as a candidate venue for the 2018 winter Olympic Games with Munich and Schönau am Königssee. The plan is for Munich to host the opening ceremony and skating events, Garmisch to host the sking and bobsleigh and luge events would take place in Schönau am Königssee.
Garmisch has already been confirmed as the host for the FIS ski world championships in 2011. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
