- Story Text: Designers Carmen Marc Valvo and Matthew Williamson show dramatically different spring 2004 collections at New York Fashion Week.
For spring 2004, designer Carmen Marc Valvo was inspired by idyllic days spent in a garden. His outfits evoke the mood of a day amongst roses and peonies, lost in daydreams and fantasies. The skirts and dresses had long chiffon ribbons, with embroidered cabbage roses and petals that decorated the entire fabric.
His outfits caressed the figures of the models, who appeared like nymphs gambolling in lush groves of blossoms.
Marc Valvo is known for unique and unusual detailing and describes his design philosophy as "evening wear that is modern and sensitive to comfort."
Backstage before the show, Marc Valvo spoke of his inspirations.
"She's a little nymphet. It is very feminine but also very sensual. A lot of chiffon that caresses the body, multi layered chiffon glistening with morning dew, inspired by my garden so the colour palette is a very soft one of rose, peony, and hibiscus. It's very feminine like little fairies running."
British designer Matthew Williamson is known for his edgy looks, unique colour sense and instinctive feel for texture. The young designer showed his colourful and intricately detailed Spring 2004 collection on Thursday.
Backstage before the show, Williamson spoke of his inspirations.
"I never like to think of it as one girl. I like to think of my clothes as worn by many women. However the style of the clothes this season is very bohemian, relaxed and casual. They are not overly dressed up There is a very laid back attitude to them. There are very casual fabrics like cord and denim, lots of beading and embroidery and chiffon lots of print, animal prints and really strong colours, lots of purple and mauve and pink. A bit like my jacket."
Both designers showed their collections as part of New York's Fashion Week which runs till September 19, 2003. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
