  • Story Text: The European Commission has launched a large-scale
    humanitarian aid distribution campaign in the Russian
    autonomous republic of Ingushetia.

    The European Union distributed 4 000 tons of food aid
    to Chechen refugees in Ingushetia on Tuesday (March 28).

    The aid includes 3 000 of meat and 1 000 tonns of rice.

    Ingushetia absorbed the majority of civilians seeking
    refuge from the war in Chechnya.

    While around twenty thousand refugees found accommodation
    in tent camps near the border between Ingushetia and Chechnya,
    it is estimated that up to ten times that number settled in
    the homes of Ingushi relatives and friends.

    On March 17 the European Union reached a deal with the
    Russian authorities to distribute 4 000 tonnes of food,
    including 3000 tonnes of canned meat and 1000
    tonnes of rice, and clothing among the refugees, especially
    those living with Ingush families.

    European Commission's Russian Mission chief Gilbert Dubois
    explained that the refugees living with families were
    suffering the most because they did not have access to the
    soup kitchens found in the camps.
